Developmental editing for fiction

A compelling story is more than a great idea—it depends on structure, character depth, pacing, emotional resonance, and a satisfying arc.

As Head of Editorial at NAC Literary Agency and a traditionally published author, I've helped more than 100 writers develop and refine their manuscripts and prepare them for submission, publication, or self-publishing.

I can help you identify what’s working, what isn’t, and how to strengthen the structure, clarity, and impact of your story.

What is developmental editing?

Developmental editing focuses on the big-picture elements of your manuscript, including:

  • Structure (plot, pacing, world-building)

  • Character (motivation, arcs)

  • Perspective (POV)

  • Emotional layer (theme, impact)

  • Market layer (genre expectations)

Through detailed editorial feedback, I help you strengthen the structure, clarity, and emotional impact of your story while preserving your voice and intention.

What you'll receive

Each developmental edit includes:

  • Detailed in-text comments throughout your manuscript

  • Light line editing where appropriate

  • A comprehensive editorial report outlining strengths and areas for improvement

  • Practical revision suggestions and craft recommendations

  • A 1-hour follow-up Zoom or phone consultation to discuss feedback and next steps

You'll leave with a clear revision plan and a stronger understanding of your manuscript.

My editorial approach

There's nothing I enjoy more than helping writers sharpen a cliffhanger, layer in effective foreshadowing, balance backstory, and build the kind of tension that keeps readers turning pages.

I look closely at whether:

  • the opening hooks the reader

  • the inciting incident arrives at the right moment

  • the middle maintains momentum

  • the stakes continue to escalate

  • the climax delivers a satisfying payoff

  • character arcs feel authentic and earned

My goal is not to rewrite your story, but to help you create the strongest version of it.

What clients say

Glenn Kleier, Worldwide Bestselling Author

Prophet of Queens (Thriller)

"Over the years I've had the privilege and pleasure of working with some outstanding editors, and I must say, Bella's eyes are among the best. The whole point of editing is to make clear to the writer issues she/he is simply too myopic to spot. I found myself nodding in agreement with regularity. Always her suggestions were food for thought and stimulated much reflection."

Vanessa Carnavale

The Memories That Make Us (Women's Fiction)

"I know I can rely on Bella not only for honest and useful feedback, but great brainstorming. She helps me draw out the essence of my stories, my character's motivations, and what will make for an even stronger plot. She understands the elements of good fiction and I'm sure her clients will love working with her."

Sarah Hawthorn

The Dilemma (Historical Fiction)

"Bella's structural and copy edits are spot on and have been invaluable in helping to shape my historical narratives. She has a knack for seeing how to strengthen a story and develop deeper reader engagement."

Ann Warner

The Babbling Brook Naked Poker Club Series (Cozy Mystery)

"Being able to critique a novel in a way that the author will find both constructive and inspiring is a gift. And Bella has it."

E.J. Mara

Basic and Almost Friends: The South Louisiana High Series (Young Adult)

"Bella is amazing to work with. Direct yet encouraging, she inspires writers to produce their very best work."
