Academic editing
Structural editing and developmental support for academic writing
Academic writing is not just about presenting research findings. It is about building a clear, coherent argument that guides the reader through complex ideas in a structured and persuasive way.
Whether you are writing a PhD thesis, preparing a journal article for publication, or refining a research-based manuscript, the challenge is often the same: turning large amounts of material into a focused, well-structured piece of scholarly writing that communicates your ideas with clarity and impact.
I provide structural editing and developmental support for academic writing, helping you strengthen argument flow, improve clarity, and ensure your work meets the expectations of your discipline and intended publication outlet.
I hold a PhD and have worked extensively with doctoral candidates and researchers across a range of fields. I also have a strong publishing background, including peer-reviewed journal articles, more than 100 columns and feature articles across public-facing platforms, and a creative nonfiction book in public health. In addition, I have experience communicating research to wider audiences through speaking engagements, including university lectures, conferences, and public talks.
My work spans both academic and public scholarship, bridging research, publishing, and editorial communication.
This combination of academic training, publishing experience, and editorial work allows me to support writers working at both early and advanced stages of their research journey.
What is academic editing?
Academic editing focuses on improving the structure, clarity, and argumentation of scholarly writing while preserving the integrity of your research.
It is not about rewriting your ideas or changing your voice. Instead, it is about helping your work become clearer, more logical, and more persuasive for your reader.
At PhD and journal level, common challenges include:
Developing a clear central argument or thesis
Organizing complex material into a coherent structure
Ensuring chapters or sections connect logically
Clarifying dense or overly complex academic language
Strengthening the link between evidence and argument
Meeting disciplinary expectations and examiner standards
Responding effectively to supervisor or peer review feedback
My role is to help you see your work from the reader’s perspective, and to identify where meaning is clear, where it becomes lost, and how it can be strengthened.
What I help with
PhD theses
Thesis structure and chapter organisation
Refining your central argument or research question
Improving flow between chapters
Strengthening academic voice and clarity
Preparing for submission or revision after examiner feedback
Ensuring coherence across a long-form document
Many doctoral candidates struggle not with the research itself, but with how to shape thousands of words into a cohesive intellectual argument. I help bring structure to that complexity.
Journal articles
Publishing in academic journals requires precision, clarity, and strong positioning of your argument within existing research.
I assist with:
Structuring articles for journal submission
Clarifying argument and contribution
Strengthening introductions and literature framing
Improving flow and readability
Responding to reviewer feedback
Aligning manuscripts with journal expectations
Research-based writing
I also work with academic and applied research writing, including:
Policy-related writing
Professional or industry research outputs
Interdisciplinary academic work
Public-facing research communication
My editorial approach
Academic writing should be rigorous, but it should also be readable.
I focus on helping you:
Clarify your central argument
Strengthen the logic and progression of ideas
Improve structure and cohesion across sections
Refine academic tone without losing clarity
Ensure your work communicates effectively to its intended audience
I will identify gaps in argument, unclear transitions, repetition, or areas where the reader may struggle to follow your reasoning, and provide practical, constructive solutions.
My goal is not to change your ideas, but to ensure your research is expressed with clarity, precision, and confidence.
