Memoir editing

Transform your life story into a compelling memoir

Every life contains stories worth telling. The challenge isn't simply recording what happened; it's shaping those experiences into a compelling narrative readers will care about.

As Head of Editorial at NAC Literary Agency and a traditionally published author, I've helped memoirists transform deeply personal experiences into engaging, publication-ready narratives.

I've edited memoirs exploring addiction and recovery, life inside religious communities, family histories, grief and loss, personal transformation, mental health challenges, and extraordinary life journeys. I also work with creative nonfiction, narrative nonfiction, and family history projects that draw on lived experience and personal storytelling.

My experience as both an author and editor informs my approach to memoir. In addition to writing fiction, I've published narrative nonfiction and personal essays, including a traditionally published nonfiction book and more than a hundred articles and columns exploring relationships, culture, identity, and lived experience. This background gives me a deep understanding of how personal stories can be shaped into compelling narratives that connect with readers.

Whether you're beginning with notes and memories or revising a completed draft, I can help you find the narrative at the heart of your memoir.

What is memoir editing?

Memoir editing combines the craft of storytelling with the emotional truth of lived experience.

Unlike autobiography, memoir isn't about documenting an entire life. It's about selecting the moments, themes, and experiences that create a meaningful narrative arc.

Often the hardest part isn't writing the story; it's deciding which story you're actually telling.

Most memoirists don't struggle with a lack of material. They struggle with deciding what belongs in the story and what can be left out.

Together, we'll explore questions such as:

• What is the central narrative thread?

• Which experiences belong in the memoir and which can be left out?

• Where should the story begin?

• What emotional journey will readers follow?

• How can themes emerge naturally throughout the manuscript?

• How can reflection and insight deepen the story without slowing the pace?

My editorial approach

I help memoirists shape complex life experiences into clear, compelling narratives.

We'll work on:

• Structure and narrative arc

• Pacing and momentum

• Voice and authenticity

• Character development

• Theme and emotional resonance

• Scene construction

• Balancing action with reflection

• Creating a satisfying ending

I look closely at how stories are layered and connected, helping writers identify recurring themes, strengthen emotional impact, and create a memoir that feels cohesive rather than episodic.

Together, we'll determine where the story truly begins, which experiences carry the most narrative weight, and how to organise events in a way that creates momentum and meaning for readers.

My goal isn't to rewrite your story. It's to help you uncover the strongest version of it while preserving your voice, perspective, and truth.
