Memoir editing

Transform your life story into a compelling memoir

Every life contains stories worth telling. The challenge is not simply recording what happened, but shaping those experiences into a narrative readers will care about.

As Head of Editorial at NAC Literary Agency and a traditionally published author, I help memoirists transform deeply personal experiences into compelling, publication-ready narratives.

I have edited memoirs exploring addiction and recovery, religious life, family histories, grief and loss, mental health, identity, and personal transformation. I also work with creative and narrative nonfiction, including family history projects drawn from lived experience.

My own work spans fiction and nonfiction, including a traditionally published nonfiction book, narrative essays, and more than 100 articles and columns on relationships, identity, culture, and lived experience. This combination of editorial and publishing experience informs how I help writers shape personal material into structured, engaging narratives that connect with readers.

Whether you're beginning with notes and memories or revising a completed draft, I can help you find the narrative at the heart of your memoir.

What is memoir editing?

Memoir editing combines storytelling craft with the emotional truth of lived experience.

Unlike autobiography, memoir is not about documenting an entire life. It is about selecting the moments, themes, and experiences that create a meaningful narrative arc.

Often, the hardest part is not writing the material—it is deciding which story you are actually telling.

Most memoirists do not struggle with lack of content. They struggle with selection, structure, and focus.

Together, we explore questions such as:

• What is the central narrative thread?
• Which experiences belong in the memoir, and which can be left out?
• Where should the story begin?
• What emotional journey will the reader follow?
• How can themes emerge naturally throughout the manuscript?
• How can reflection deepen the story without slowing momentum?

My editorial approach

I help memoirists shape complex lived experience into clear, compelling narrative form.

We work on:

• Structure and narrative arc
• Pacing and momentum
• Voice and authenticity
• Character development (self and others)
• Theme and emotional resonance
• Scene construction
• Balancing action with reflection
• Creating a satisfying ending

I look closely at how stories connect across time and experience, helping you identify recurring themes, strengthen emotional impact, and build a cohesive narrative rather than a series of episodes.

Together, we determine where the story truly begins, which experiences carry narrative weight, and how to organise events for maximum clarity and emotional impact.

My goal is not to rewrite your story, but to help you shape the strongest version of it while preserving your voice, perspective, and truth.
